I am a sales puke in my heart.
I've tried to reform by joining the ranks of other reformed sales pukes who have reinvented themselves as "marketers" but all the whitewash in the world could not cover up the sneaky smile that crossed my lips this morning when I read about Sears and Kmart and their campaign to get your government stimulus checks before you cash them!
That's right - if you take them your government stimulus check when it arrives in May or June, these retailers will give you two gift cards: one for $300 and the other for an additional $30.
It's bloody brilliant. Who could resist a 10% return when the banks are giving a quarter point and the best CD gives you 4%? All the better for them as their margins more than cover their outlay and they've completely secured your business. Additionally, they will reap the residual sales you rack up when in your exuberance you over shop.
My question is, what intoxicating display of opportunistic sales mastery will the traditional retail scions of the consumer electronics industry come up with to beat this? They better not rest too comfortably on the completely unbiased research promoted by the Consumer Electronics Association which claims that some 39 percent of Americans will spend that money on a TV.
They need to be sprite in their response to the early birds who got this worm and just might sell a whole lot of TV's because of it. I want to see them work for this. I want to see sales savvy and marketing genius.
