I'll admit that I hold a warm place in my heart for plasma displays. As their production ends, they will be missed. But the pain is greatly diminished because OLED TVs like the LG 55EC9300 ably maintain the legacy of gorgeous rich and velvety picture quality.

Both plasma and OLED are emissive displays, meaning that each pixel can be turned on or off independently. Unlike LCD displays, OLED TVs do not require a backlight. The result is that OLED displays can produce precise true blacks which give a foundation for higher contrast and richer colors.

Forget about the physics, the picture quality of the LG 55EC9300 is freaking amazing. I'm not talking eye assaulting, more like eye massaging. Colors are not gaudy. They are smooth and sophisticated. Simply, the long-awaited OLED potential has been fulfilled.

Now, not to rain on the parade, a display this good will have a tendency to make clear the flaws in the content. It's like putting on a new stronger pair of eyeglasses.

With this TV, I occasionally notice noise in the shadows of certain dark scenes. This is with broadcast content played back on my DVR, which I consider the culprit. I have never encountered this artifact while watching Blu-ray movies, which look marvelous.

The 55EC9300 also plays back 3D programs. I'm not a big 3D fan, but watching the Boxtrolls 3D Blu-ray was a pleasure, not only for the refined 3D picture but also because this LG TV employs passive glasses, which are much more eye friendly.

As for audio, LG provides an impressive looking Sound menu (pictured right, click to enlarge) with features like Sound Effects and a Sound Optimizer.

But there is only so much that you can squeeze out of the pair of 20W speakers integrated into the 55EC9300.

Give this sumptuous OLED screen the respect it deserves and pair it with an equally impressive surround sound system.

Let's give LG credit for persevering in producing a big screen OLED TV. Their efforts in the form of the stunning 55EC9300 were well rewarded. The picture quality ranks with the best that we have seen and this 55-inch 1080p Smart TV handily earns our Highly Recommended rating.
