I recently purchased the 505XVT a few months back and have been very happy with it thus far. It is my first flat panel TV. I went with the Plasma because of websites like this and other that truely believe Plasmas are a better technology.
I have to admit though, after seeing some of my friends most recent purchases, LCD 120hz, I am quite jealous. Quite Jealous because of the 3D like images it produces. It looks fake, artificial, and at times choppy, but its all they can talk about. It really pops out of the screen. They are anything but impressed with my Plasma, and think I am ridiculous for explaining to them that Plasma is still known to have an edge in technology, and that they should clearly look and compare both before purchasing.
I guess I want a little respect for my little 505XVT. I know its impossible to create the 3D images that the 120hz produces, but is there any calibration other than the one you mentioned in your review to really help the images 'pop' more and help give it a slight 3D look. I know this is shallow, but I do think the 3D look looks cool at times. I know it wasn't what the original director intended, but it sure is the talk of my friends. They hardly come over anymore to watch flicks cause I think they are simply unimpressed.
What is this plasma equivalent too in terms of 120hz? Is there a way to measure it. I heard on AV Forums that most plasmas are around 480hz. Is that accurate? If so, how come it doesn't look more 3D that that of a 120hz.
Lastly, I see outlines, or halo's of images and characters when standing to the left or right of my 505XVT. When really close its almost as if you can see two layered projections. It makes me think its not aligned right. I obviously don't notice it straight on but can definitely tell its there when off to the side. I thought Plasmas were supposed to have good viewing angles. When I looked at my friends LCD 120hz Samsung and Vizo, I did not see these outlines or halo's of images. Any thoughts?
Thanks for your review, and look forward to hearing your feedback.
