John,
I really can't advise you about working with the Service Menu. Simply, the most that I can remember about the process was that it was more complicated than I was comfortable with and the tech guy had to walk me through it. Also, it required a special computer cable that I luckily had from years ago.
As for viewing distance, you might be asking the wrong guy if you don't like to sit close. I have covered the topic in this article:
