Toshiba 50L7300U Review
50" LED Cloud HDTV, $1399

Performance

When analyzing video performance, I'm always a little leery when one of the first things I notice is that the TV exhibits blooming around the edges of the screen.

You usually notice it when the TV is turned on but not displaying an image. The black picture is a little lighter along the outside where the edge-lit backlight is not evenly dispersed.

Hopefully, the blooming disappears when the TV is playing back a program and this is definitely the case with the Toshiba 50L7300U.

In fact, after watching numerous sources, Blu-rays, Dish Network, and Netflix, my misgivings were assuaged by the solid picture quality of this Cloud TV.

I'm not talking plasma TV deep, deep black level, but consistently very good, pleasing viewing.

As for the audio quality produced by the integrated 10W + 10W speaker system, it's bright and lively. Perhaps too much so, it could use some support on the low end to give it a fuller bodied sound.

The volume can fill a smallish room, but if you turn it up too high, it tends towards tinny.

Before I seem too harsh on these tiny speakers, almost all integrated speakers that I have heard present similar results.

If you care about audio quality at all, buy a sound bar at the very minimum and ideally a dedicated audio system with a subwoofer.

Conclusion

The Toshiba 50L7300U Cloud TV combines very good video performance with Smart TV connectivity. It doesn't supply all the gee-whiz features like voice and motion control. And it isn't overflowing with pages and pages of apps. This 50-inch LED TV finds a comfortable niche just below those expensive high-end TVs.
